The Immune System
The human immune system has two main branches: the innate and adaptive immune systems. Together they protect us from pathogens, but they operate very differently in speed, specificity and memory.
The innate immune system is the body’s rapid, first-line defence. It includes physical barriers like skin and mucous membranes, as well as cells such as macrophages, neutrophils, natural killer cells and proteins.
The fever, aching muscles, and malaise you may feel when you have a bad cold or flu, or after being vaccinated, are evidence of your innate immune system working hard to protect you.
These components are always ready and respond within minutes to hours. They recognise broad patterns common to many microbes using sensors like Toll-like receptors – and this is exactly where Noxopharm’s Sofra™ technology fits in, as it functions in the realm of the innate immune system.
In contrast, the adaptive immune system is highly specific and slower to activate, and involves T cells and B cells that recognise precise antigens, markers unique to individual pathogens. On first encounter it takes several days to ramp up, but it generates powerful targeted responses — including antibodies from B cells and cytotoxic or helper functions from T cells. Most importantly, the adaptive system creates immunological memory, enabling faster and stronger responses to future exposures.
So why is the innate system the first line of defence? Because it buys critical time. By quickly containing infections and alerting the adaptive system through antigen presentation and cytokine signals, innate immunity prevents most invaders from gaining a foothold. Without this immediate response, many infections would overwhelm us before the adaptive system could mobilize.
The two systems are therefore deeply interconnected. Innate cells activate and shape adaptive responses, while adaptive immunity enhances innate functions.
In summary, the innate immune system provides instant, broad protection as our first shield, while the adaptive system delivers precise, long-lasting immunity. Their coordinated action is what makes our immune defence so effective.
